Meet Our Pack

Teddy

Teddy was born 2/12/2024 and is a very happy, social and active adolescent. He is intelligent and learns quickly. He is a small male Newf weighing about 95 lbs. Before coming to Newfy Haven, he was living in a barn. At 9 months old his owners put him up for adoption. I followed him until 14 months old and learned  no one had inquired for him, even though listed through multiple rescue organizations for 5 months. Most people looking for a Newf want the breed standard. He was not that, and was in "velociraptor" stage, and had medical needs that would need to be addressed in the future (neuter and umbilical hernia). He would not be good for breeding or showing due to the puppy farm breeding resulting in the unusual coloration as well as overbite. Though not an older Newf for our Haven, I knew he could be obedience trained and would provide great social and active interactions for the other 5 year old Newf. The final factor in the decision to adopt him was knowing no one else had stepped forward and he was running out of time in this formative stage to get appropriate learning and social interaction with other dogs. I brought him home and sought veterinary evaluation and care right away. His matting was so substantial from living in the barn and not getting brushed. Neither I nor a professional groomer could shave the matted hair. He was not tolerant of the shaving equipment. The veterinary clinic had to put him under anesthesia to complete the task. They determined the asymptomatic hernia could wait to be addressed until such time as he would be neutered. The new understanding of large dog development including bones, joints and soft tissue, is to wait until at least 2 years of age to take away their natural hormones (neuter or spay), so there are far less health problems later.
This last summer 2025 he did very well in beginner's obedience school and has acclimated well into the pack, being the "toddler" of our Haven.

Chewie

Chewie

Chewie was born 8/24/2020 and is a happy girl who just wants to play and love everyone she meets. She was with her original family in FL from the age of 8 weeks. She had a wonderful early life and learned obedience skills earlier than most. The family moved to Oregon and due to complications in their health years later, they needed to re-home her. I brought her from Oregon in January of 2025 and she adjusted to a new life right away. For a short time I debated whether to let her become a mother before having her spayed. A friend and experienced Newfoundland breeder offered to do all the work pre and post breeding. Ultimately I decided not to breed her as she has a couple of traits I felt were not best for the breed, she is fairly small, weighing about 85 lbs. More concerning was the tongue defect and the risk this would pass on to a new generation. She has a very long tongue which she has trouble containing in her mouth and this complicates her eating. Most of the time this is an adorable look with her tongue sticking out at rest. It can be disconcerting to see it sticking out 3 inches when she is sleeping, and one wonders if she is still among the living! As the tongue dries out when she is sleeping, this could cause future health issues which may need to be addressed later. At this time, she has acclimated to the tongue over her 5 years and I'm sure doesn't realize she is different in any way from other beautiful Newfy girls. Even with the tongue, she is really great at tug of war, wins most competitions even with larger dogs. It is also her favorite game with people. She is a big fan of belly rubs. In the water, she will show her swimming prowess with powerful front legs and webbed feet, retrieving sticks and balls for hours! If you are eating at the table, she is likely to be under the table and laying down on your foot, keeping you warm. There may be a future for her doing some therapy work with her gentle loving nature.

Storm

Storm was born 12/27/2019 and is the biggest sweetest cuddliest bear ever! He is a rare gray Newf which is nostalgic for me. That was the color of one of my first family Newfs in 1964 (Champion Newfield's Nelson). From my understanding, he had a good life with his family for over 5 years in Idaho, but due to changes in family circumstances, they were unable to keep him and he went into foster (with a name change to Storm). After 6 weeks in foster care, I drove across the mountains to bring him home in September 2025. He immediately bonded with me. He is big and powerful, now weighing a healthy lean 140 lbs. He has powerful legs and will practically bound up and down on his rear legs when extra excited. Storm has a massive skull and may look intimidating, but he is a really gentle love bug. He wants to be by your side getting petted and will really love it if you give him long hugs wrapping your arms all around him. He has amazing trust allowing me to manipulate and trim his feet, which most dogs would not enjoy. He is healthy and amazingly fast when he wants to sprint (see train chase video below). Storm has really come around to being part of the pack after initially being a bit standoffish with the other dogs. He also is the Newfy playground superintendent, barking at other dogs and trying to break it up, if he feels their play has gotten a bit too rough. Storm excelled at Beginner Obedience School, graduating 11/2/2025. I anticipate he will do great therapy work in his older years.

Funny Teddy Story

When I brought him home, his name was "Beef" likely due to his coloration resembling a cow. However on close examination of the historical veterinary documents, I found his original name was Teddy, and at 13 weeks of age, the new owners renamed him Beef. Would you agree with name reversion to Teddy?
